Corporate Social Responsibility is an approach whereby the organization consider the interests of society by taking responsibility for the impact of their activities in customers, business partners, employees, shareholders as well as the environment and society.

In line with Carl Zeiss' Core Values - "In the tradition of Ernst Abbe, we are strongly committed to our social responsibilities for the benefit of our employees and our communities", Carl Zeiss SEA embarked on initiatives and activities that give back to our society and community.

About Carl Zeiss CARE
Carl Zeiss CARE is an initiative embarking on the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) with a course to promote volunteerism and philanthropy in the community.

We aim to promote active citizenry by providing volunteering opportunities for individuals in Carl Zeiss to genuinely care and demonstrate social responsibility towards the good of the community.

Why Carl Zeiss CARE?
Survey* has shown that while volunteer participation has risen by 1.7% from 2004 to 2008, 66% of Singaporeans remain in the non-volunteer sector. Despite the number of volunteers increasing, only 45 million volunteer hours were recorded for 2008, compared to 49 million for 2006. The study also showed that Singaporeans lagged in giving of theirtime, compared to citizens in the UK and US.

In the compulsory community service projects in organisations, many of the employees seem to be providing labor to serve ad-hoc projects without proper education and understanding in the areas of community needs that they are serving. This has cultivated a mindset of indifference that volunteering is an act of the hand by providing manpower rather than an act from the heart - where there is passion and commitment to the course.

As an integral part of the community, we can make a sustainable and productive contribution to effect positive transformation in society through forging ongoing, synergistic partnerships with the non profit sector.

We believe that transformation in society begins with transformation of the mind.

By means of SERVE, EMPOWER, ACT AND WIN, Carl Zeiss Care provides volunteering opportunities for our staff to show genuine concern and social responsibility within the community.
