"My first Zeiss prism loupes were a gift to me from my father in the second year of undergraduate dentistry when I first started clinics. I was much too embarrassed to use them in school and it was not until graduation that I used them in earnest. I have since used them for over 15 years.
I have tried several other optic systems at international dental meetings, but have found the Zeiss system to be the most comfortable, both on the nose and ears and especially on the eyes. They give a very comfortable depth of field and I have never suffered head-aches from them. Zeiss also comes with a very large and comfortable silicone nose pad. The optics are superb. No distortion or coloured rings perceptible.
I used to use the loupes only for prosthodontics, but soon found them most useful for all dental procedures. It is such a pleasure to be able to see clearly without having to "climb into" the patients mouth. Everything from evaluation of margins, examination of cracked teeth, even scaling for calculus is brought to a higher level. Individual blood vessels in the tissue can even be seen. My posture has also improved, as I have to stay about a foot away from the patient to be able to stay in focus.
I have made several field trips overseas and the loupes have since been to Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam and China. Through rain and shine, clinics and jungle work, they have proved their toughness, never getting loose, distorting, breaking and remaining optically excellent.
Their initial cost is quite high, but something of great cost that you use daily is of great value. Something less costly, that does not perform what it was purchased for, or is an irritation to use, is a great waste. In my 15 year experience, the Zeiss loupes have proven their very great value. My only regret, is not having started using them earlier -- in my undergraduate days."
